Day 21
Today we road bikes to The Garden District. About a 6 mile round trip. This picture was obviously taken when we left because we are NOT red! It's very flat and bikes are common but I still felt like I was taking my life in my hands. Maybe it was because of the heat. We started with riding through the The French Quarter. Everything is very close and streets are very small. I especially enjoyed the baskets of greens and flowers on the balcaneys of the "houses", if that is what you call them. It is way faster and easier to navigate on a bike.
Then down the river front. I loved the sounds of the river boats.
We then rode through the downtown area and under the highway. The street along the edge of The Garden District are little shops, a lot like you would see in the neighborhoods of Portland
Lucky for us one of them was a bike shop/rental that changed out the rear tire on Bob's bike that had a bad worn spot from age and it rubbing against something on the RV ride. π The market wall was nicely painted.
The Garden District is rows and rows of very old individual houses of all sizes.
Some of trees are huge.
And of course I couldn't resist a picture of this gorgeous hibiscus πΊ
Right in the middle of the houses is a cemetery and you got it. Had to walk in
I think if I were a lizard I would like to live here
Then for the ride back.... I voted for lunch at The Oyster Bar. I didn't think sea food could get any better then the Oregon Coast. This was really about air conditioning and waterπ the food was a bonus. Then back through the traffic and I again "had" to take a picture of the theater.
We made it back and spent the next several hours doing laundry and setting in the pool.
The day is done, God is good......
Great to see you're got to spend some time in New Orleans. Great to see you out on bikes, too. Sounds like your new tubes are holding up, but not the old tires. NBD.
ReplyDeleteMy best memory of NO is all the random live music on the streets - it all sounded wonderful.
That cemetery in the photo looks like the one from the movie Easy Rider, where Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson, and some women are tripping on LSD among the strange grave sites.
I think the grave sites are raised because the water table can be very high, and underground coffins could force there way up through the soil at certain times of the year. Either the coffins are above ground, or the above ground structures are there to provide enough weight to keep the from floating.
