Day 37 - Oregon or Bust

OREGON OR BUST!!!

Somehow being back where everything is familiar makes the last 37 days seem like a dream. Oh but what a dream it was! I asked Bob this morning if he would do it again for as long and he said yes, without hesitation. Hmmm, I'll have to let you know what I think. The trip home continues through Winnemucca then north to Denio, Nevada. Getting there we are so close to Oregon why not go to Fields, Oregon for a hamburger and milkshake.

Anything you have ever heard about the hamburgers there are true.

The hamburgers are very good and the meat patties are big. I would advise never ordering a "double". Once again the experience was a big part of it.

Just a footnote: the milkshake was the best six dollar and something milkshake I've ever had!!

We loved seeing Steens Mountain.

Then back to Nevada, how could I resist the sign going the other way.

And the first scene past the sign

And the rest the town looked pretty much the same although we did see a gas station that was open just before the sign that said "NO services for 86 miles". There were what looks to be men playing games at a table in front.

On we go to Lakeview, Oregon. Just as we are getting back into Nevada we see this

Bob says it's a dry lake bed, I say it is water.. I love being right. According to the map at The Great Basin National Park this area is part of the Great Basin. We learned the water in the Great Basin does not flow into any river systems one on to the oceans, rather it simply seeps into the earth.

This picture is noteworthy for two reasons... the windmill that was turning, and the view of Steens Mountain looking east.

Back into Oregon. In all fairness to Nevada I have to include this picture, note the background.

Ok, trivia for the day. Oregon is the only state we have been in that "paints" their cattle guards on the roads. They sure are smoother and quieter. Doesn't say much for the cows. I wonder if they are stupider in Oregon.

The temperature has been around 90 today. There have not been near the number of high mountain climbs, but there are mountains. Highway 140 is an amazing drive. Oregon has every bit of the grandor the other states have.

In 37 Days we have: traveled 7588 miles; been in 22 states; visited 6 National Parks, met new friends; got to visit old friends; spend $1,371.86 for 559 gallons of diesel; averaged 13.8 mpg making it cost 17.7 cents per mile. Bob can probably provide more stats on request.🙄

We are spending tonight in Lakeview and meeting Oni and Dan and family tomorrow to camp for a couple nights before going home.
