Day 36 - July 17

(Happy Birthday Sis! 🎉 🎂)

Onward!!! Nevada

I am posting this picture mostly for the background... flat with mountains in the background.
Great Basin National Park is right over the border. As we arrived at the park visitor center, we were greeted with the sight of a professional snake catcher and rangers who were attempting to catch a rattler that had been getting a little too close for comfort. Oh great, can't wait for this experience. I heard the catcher report in the lobby a bit later that he was done for today. It was to hot for him and would be to hot for the snake. They needed to caution people but he would be back the following morning when the snake should be out of hiding again. "Who" does a job like that, (clearing throat) Kyle 😑??

This would be a good place to put in a trivia fact. The Great Basin has it's own special species of rattlesnake 🐍 "The Great Basin Rattlesnake" 🐍 that is found no where else on 🌏😐 I don't care much for snakes.

Back to our visit, we went on a tour of the Lehman Caves. Fascinating and beautiful!!!

It was raining when we came out of the cave and it cooled off just a bit because the rain cloud was covering the sun. Then Wilbur took us up to one of the middle viewpoints in the park.  The road was narrow and steep (8-10% grade), and Wilbur's 24-1/2' length was 6" over the posted limit, but we made it.  The GPS recorded Wilbur's new climbing record of 9203 ft!

The views were worth the climb, with valleys (you can hear the water running somewhere in the distance)

And mountians

And Utah (where we drove across)

Back down that mountain and on through Nevada... not to be confused with Utah.  In the Great Basin, the mountain ranges run North-South, and we were heading West, so we climbed over mountain range after mountain range after mountain range! It was great to look at (for awhile), and there was not a lot of traffic so we could control our pace and Wilbur conquered!  The elevation bounced from 6000 to over 7000 feet 5 or 5 times and finally to Austin, NEVADA? Didn't know there was one. It was on the side of the last hill coming down. From here we turned north to Battle Mountain, NV and the road was flat and straight. The sun is setting and the temperature is going down. Arrived about 10pm  and found a spot for the night. You can tell we are on the home stretch, Bob is traveling past 6pm....
