Day 22 Officially 3 weeks on the road, 4467 miles

Today has been quite a trip. We have headed toward Austin via the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the highway west out of New Orleans is built on pilings the trees grow out of the water We left the main highway and took Louisiana 82

First we noticed fields of water??

And planted fields

Then we realized these are rice crops, which is one of the top 10 crops produced in Louisiana. Then we noticed fields like these

That had orange bobbers lined up in them. These are crayfish fields. They plant rice in them to feed the crayfish and they harvest the crayfish (pronounced crawfish). As we travel on closer to the gulf the majority of the houses are on stiltsmost of them have boats parked under them. Hmmm in case of flooding you would have to make sure you got your boat out before the water got too high... The land and water are flat for as far as you can see in any direction. The vegetation included huge trees with strains of moss hanging from them or a palm tree once in a while and cactus that are blooming among other things... everything is green. As the crops go away they are replaced by fields of cattle. We stopped on the beach so we could officially touch the water.

saw a crab

Oh wait, that's a toy. You can camp on the beaches here

There were people camping and playing but the beach has a lot of trash on it. It made me appreciate the Oregon coast. The temperature was about 90 but it was comfortable and with the breeze you didn't notice the humidity. The water was about the same temperature as the air. Back on the road, but the next stop ✋ was the ferry ⛴ in Cameron, LA.  For a minute Wilbur got real excited, thinking he was going to Anderson Island.

We had to wait for traffic

Then a whole 4 minute ride.

You know when you enter Texas because there are refineries and fields as far as you can see.

Tonight we are in Winnie, Texas.

We would like to offer our love and prayers for my nieces and nephews in the loss early today of their mother, Naomi Currier. She will be remembered fondly.
